The professional audio file mixing tool for the industrial content making workflows

Introduction

AUDMIX is software that can downmix multiple WAV files to stereo files. It is developed to minimize the burden of downmixing the simultaneous recording of sound materials which is necessary for professional video shootings. It is designed with the consideration of DIT business and had equipped with the metadata transfer function to pass the time reference information to the later editing process. This will make the workflow that was complicated with the former general audio tools, much easier.

User Interface is in a color that will not disturb the lightning environment at the shooting scenes so that you can work on the conversions in between the shootings as well. Moreover, it is equipped with the function to automatically change the file name when detecting the same file name. This is to prevent overwriting the files and save the master materials. With these functions, this tool will minimize the psychological burden for the on-site operators who continuously work under pressure.

Simple workflow using AUDMIX
Simple workflow using AUDMIX

This mixing tool is equipped with a function to transport time references embedded in the input WAV as they are to the output WAV file. It is designed to be ideal for operations such as mixing audio tracks recorded at various locations as they are and placing them on a stereo signal when multiple audio files recorded simultaneously on location are passed along with the material for temporary editing of the video. AUDMIX is also designed to be easy to use on set, with features not found in other tools, such as a safe design that never overwrites existing files. AUDMIX is designed with maximum consideration for the DIT environment and handles only audio files as input/output targets. Therefore, it does not access any audio devices. It can be safely introduced into existing DIT environments.

AUDMIX was designed as a tool for turning audio material collected from independent audio recording systems into integrated audio tracks for temporary editing. It is designed to generate down-mixed files in a short amount of time, even on sites with strict time constraints, and to minimize the mental burden on the shooters.

Features

  • Easy operation of selecting the mixing target only by dropping the file.
  • Downmixing multiple WAV files to stereo WAV files.
  • Time reference information’s propagation function that is considered with the affinity to the later editing process.
  • Process rack function that can execute the conversion process simultaneously.
  • Reassured for small signal multiple mixing with 64-bit floating-point internal calculation processing.
  • Stereo buss input function for output that can input signal with ability to set the gain independently on the left and right.
  • MAGIC technology is the technology to adjust the level automatically according to the number of mixing channels.
  • Convenient carbon copy function for storing the multiple copies into different storages.
  • Excel log sheet creation function which is convenient for work status reports.
  • Double safety mechanism for not breaking the master data.
  • Match Time Reference Finder(MTRF) function that is to find the WAV files from the same take according to the time information stored in the WAV file.

Automatic search of simultaneous recording audio materials

When simultaneously recorded tracks exist as multiple monaural audio files, it is hard to find the related files from the file system by hand. AUDMIX is equipped with the function to find the related audio materials automatically regarding the audio extension information from the WAV file. Register the first WAV file, and then right-click and select 'find contents'.

Select the extension audio information which applies to the output WAV file

AUDMIX is supporting to store the audio extension information following the regulation of Broadcast Wave Format(BWF). You can select the extension audio information that applies to the output WAV file from the selected input WAV file. Select the desired WAV file from the WAV file that is registered to the input track. Right-click the file and select 'Copy the audio extension information'. The audio extension information that you selected here will be recorded when adding the process list and be applied when you export the WAV file with converting process.

Open materials with tool/ See material locations

Confirmation of input and output materials are necessary and there are a huge amount of materials to confirm in limited time during the shootings. AUDMIX is equipped with buttons to open the WAV file with tools and open the location where the materials are by one-click for each input/output file. It is the Utility function to help the DIT business which requires detailed tasks such as confirmation before input and after output.

Simultaneous batch processable process list

Parallel executable architecture of AUDMIX is processed simultaneously by distributing the different multi-channel mixdown process to multiple CPU cores. Therefore, the contents of the process can be confirmed before the execution and many audio materials can be processed in a short time compared to the sequential execution. By using the maximum of calculation resources from the operation environment, the processing time will be shortened and will not stop the activities while shooting.

Adopting demultiplexer + channel individual fader for stereo bass superimposition

When editing the audio recorded by shotgun microphones during the post process, every audio signal will be the guideline for editing. In this case, you would like to have a certain audio signal on the stereo bass with the level you like. AUDMIX has adopted the signal processing system that can mix the stereo bass separately for left and right using demultiplexer and channel individual fader, not the input audio signal panning. It enables the same level of audio distribution on the left and right, which was difficult for the former panning.

Supported with multi-track WAV file

It is supporting not only monaural or stereo WAV files but also multi-track WAV files which have more than 3 channels. AUDMIX allows setting the audio level for the output stereo bass for each track in files. It is the same in the case of multi-track WAV files with more than 3 channels and can decide which level to send it out to the stereo bass for each track stored in files. The User Interface is designed according to the layout of the analog mixer which would make it easier for people to operate for the first time.

Carbon copy function to copy the exported file to multiple places

The DIT working environment must have double backup processing to be secure with data. AUDMIX has the carbon copy function which is the function to copy the file to the backup directory once the exporting is done. You will be able to use this function in various scenes, such as when you have to send the same material to different studios or to save the audio to both local and external storage.

IEEE 64bit, 32bit floating point support

WAV files saved in IEEE 64-bit and IEEE 32-bit floating point formats are also quickly supported. This greatly improves the adaptability to audio files recorded by professional audio equipment. In order to mix detailed audio information, the mixing bus is processed in 64-bit floating point format. This provides ample signal processing even when mixing a large number of tracks simultaneously.

Design

Internal Signal Processing System

The development of AUDMIX has started with designing the block diagram of the internal signal processing system. It is designed from the investigation of “What is the signal processing block that focused particularly in audio file’s downmixing which will be necessary for DIT business?”. Multiple WAV files can freely be connected to the downmixing stereo bass and have the automatic level adjusting function regarding the connected number of channels. You can get a suitable signal level when downmixing a large number of audio tracks, which makes the on-site operation much simpler. 64-bit floating-point processing is used for the internal calculation. That is to reassure the mixing for small level audio signals. Moreover, parallel executable architecture is newly developed to design this as batch executable for multiple processing. The design of simultaneous parallel processing as far as calculation resource allows, supports you to use your limited time on-site even more effective.

User Interface

To express the highly orthogonal sign processing system as User Interface, the layout is inspired by the former analog mixer. The input tracks are displayed on the left side. It is formatted to arrange from the left side and then can scroll as the number of channels increase. Process track that can do parallel processing simultaneously is displayed and can confirm the process in one sight. If you have room for the display region in the operating environment, it might be good to expand the window width so that you can see the channels in one sight. With this User Interface that has integrated with an internal signal processing system, it is designed to be able to handle complex internal processing easily.
